While both Willis and his Drac counterpart can breathe on the planet, the environment and its creatures are relatively hostile, forcing the two to work together to survive.
As time goes by, Willis and Jeriba become unlikely friends, though their unique relationship faces considerable challenges.

Wolfgang Petersen Director. Stephen Friedman Producer. Zammis is curious and follows. He is discovered by a pair of Scavengers. Davidge attacks the men, but Zammis inadvertently stands between Davidge and one miner, and Davidge is gunned down.
Later, a BTA patrol ship finds Davidge apparently dead, and returns him to his base space station. During an impersonal funeral ceremony, Davidge suddenly awakens.
He is later reinstated to duty but not as a pilot, as his superiors want to make sure he has not been brainwashed.
Unable to get help in rescuing Zammis, Davidge steals a ship to find the child by himself. He manages to find the Scavenger ship and sneak aboard.
Davidge speaks to the Drac slaves in their own language; they know about Zammis and realize he is Uncle. Davidge enters the facility, fighting one miner after another, and the slaves revolt.
Towards the end of the battle, they are assisted by the BTA crew who pursued the stolen ship. In the epilogue , Davidge and Zammis are on the Drac homeworld: " The novella was published in and won a Hugo Award for Best Novella.
We would still be there. Filming was stopped. At the same time, Fox changed its upper management and new Chairman, Barry Diller , and head of production, Lawrence Gordon , decided to move ahead with a new director.
The studio had faith in the story and actors involved, and asked Wolfgang Petersen to take over as director. However Peterson changed his mind when he read the script.
I really was very much impressed with the script but I had too much to do. That's when they offered to stop production until I was done with The Neverending Story.
Petersen did not like any of Loncraine's work. You always had a feeling of a human inside something and the feeling of the foreign planet was missing.
Stars Quaid and Gossett remained on during the duration of the film's delays and were paid "holding" money. Large sets were constructed, including a man-made lake, and Gossett's Drac makeup was redesigned, taking several months on its own.
The film finished shooting seven months after its delay. The president of Fox's marketing department felt the film was an "extremely difficult movie to market"—that its story of two species' evolving from enemies to friends made the science fiction picture less about technology and more along the lines of brotherhood, as epitomized by the tagline : "Enemies because they were taught to be.

I, for one, found it unusual that a peace-loving Earth would be so quick to fight other aliens, rather than pursue some diplomatic relationship. But I guess I shouldn't assume humans are logical.
I shared a concern with Roger Ebert, who said that the film "gives us an alien that is too human, too familiar. It takes that amazing planet and gives it food, water, gravity and atmosphere that are suitable for both humans and Dracs Why couldn't the Drac be truly alien in this film?
Ebert, in his review, actually goes on about this concern for some time, referencing other science fiction stories which I will not do here. Ebert also ponders, "As the slavers stood over their captives with whips, I found myself wondering how cost-effective it would be to transport manual laborers millions of light years.
Surely a technology capable of arriving at the planet Fyrine IV would have figured out a better way to mine its ores?
The film was a "buddy film" at heart, and a commentary on racism. But it was also an action film, and any good action film requires some senseless fight scenes and killing.
Action movies are generally not Oscar-worthy in their writing, but that's because they cater to the primal urges and not the mind, which isn't always a bad thing.
Ebert's last concern is that this "is a movie that made no compromises in its art direction, its special effects and its performances - and then compromised everything else in sight.
And yes, I suppose their was a cheesiness to raising an alien child to like American football. But this wasn't an Asimov or Crichton science-rich story -- it was a fun story.
And it was a s film, for goodness sakes. He is right about the art direction and everything he praises. The directing, acting and scenery were amazing.
I forget where this was filmed, but it serves very well as an alien landscape. My only bother with the art was that I felt the film had a bit much influence from "Star Wars".
I know this is a film from the same era, so it's hard not to be influenced. But there is a creature that is very much like a Sarlacc, and the spacecraft shown in this film had George Lucas written all over them.
Maybe I'm just picky, though. All in all, i really enjoyed this film. It was at a good pace, it had great acting from two of the better performers out there, and it comes from Petersen, who refuses to make low-quality pictures.
Ebert might be overly concerned with the technical aspects of this universe, but for all the shortcomings this film had in that regard, it more than made up for with sheer pleasure.

The dialogue and forced racism element is utterly hilarious. While it's extremely enjoyable and fun, I don't think any of it was intentional.

The special effects, landscapes, and aliens are great. Quaid and Gossett Jr. The movie drastically changes when one of them has a baby.
If you like sci-fi movies, "Enemy Mine" would be a good movie to get. My only complaint is that it didn't have much action in it like many other classic sci-fi movies, but it's still a good movie.
