Spoiler alert: Nas ain't in it. What a damn tease. Direction by Zoya Akhtar never ceases to amaze me. Like it or not, I think Zoya Akhtar did present the 'true side' of slums in Mumbai.
This is got to be the first ever Rap based Hindi movie I have seen ever and the this could be a 'trendsetting' influential change in the streets of Mumbai and hopefully fosters the 'healthy side' of things as good as what the message gets conveyed in the movie.
The movie leaves you inspired and expression of criticism of or pessimism about something is not promoted in the movie. There are no crazy unrealistic fight scenes that we see in movies which was refreshingly nice.
Rating the movie with five stars! This is a strong spirited movie and for those who dared to dream to change their reality, this is significant.
More so to inspire many to dare dreaming. It is a great movie for human rights and against all forces stopping people with talent and intelligence to move forward and free themselves from the shackles of class or caste.
I like the spirit of this film a lot and the acting is very good, specially Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Kalki Koechlin.
Such a movie has never been made in Bollywood. I could not watch in the theater because I needed to watch it with subtitle.
Loved Ali's character in this movie, every character was real and the actors portraying them are all outstanding. Copied from 8 mile.
The original story was that of an artist that rose from the streets. Since it has a common theme with 8 mile, they copied a bunch of scenes from there.
The movie is sub par at best. I will need the hour I spent on it back. They count on the fact that the audience has not seen the original.
Ranvir has done a great job with his role. These movie is meant to depict reality of the streets of India. The set up does justice, but not the dialogue.
The ideas seem to have been translated from English to Hindi. Several things are right about this movie. The one I was most impressed with was the dialogues.
I have always found these days that Indian films have horrible dialogue writing. Just people being lazy and not putting enough effort into writing.
This movie did a great job of keeping the language realistic to the characters but still delivering the message with the strength it needs to make an impact.
Overall it is an excellent movie with a great storyline, great acting, and great music. A Must Watch! Pros - Ranveer and Alia performance.
Cons - second half a bit slow and draggy, Kalki role was less and nothing much to perform. Ranveer's brother role and a few other characters in the movie had nothing much to do!
So all these flaws are nothing when the story, dialogues, music, and the lead artist performances are awesomely amazing!
I never saw and never will see 8 Mile because I don't care for Eminem as an artist. However, I don't think it's fair to judge this film off of a "similar" western written one.

Meanwhile, Murad realizes his calling to be a rapper. Authentic Hip Hop in India is a recent phenomenon and like anywhere else in the world, is rising from the streets.
Art is a distant dream for the colonized poor of India and this story is about Murad's journey from realizing his love for rap and chasing his dream to inadvertently transcending his class.
The film showcases street rap from the crevices of Mumbai's by lanes. The poetry is conscious of the city's socio-economic fabric and highlights the challenges faced by the disenfranchised youth in the minority population.
Was happy to see a new style rapper-based movie being produced by Bollywood. I am not a fan of such music, but can always appreciate a movie.
And, honestly, that was the good part of the movie. Then there are side stories which were more like the 60's style and dragged the movie down - making it boring at times.
Alia and Siddhant were the best. Ranveer decent. The finale was a bit let down. Just too much of celebration which didn't emotionally connect with me.
