The whole thing is to saccharin, clean, sparkling and bright. Even the frontline action scenes, despite the large number of body parts, are all to sanitised.
As this film lacks any ambiance of real grit or convincing strife, the amazing actions of Desmond Doss, have little to contrast against so seem must less than they really must have been.
Like too many recent films this one also uses the bright and vibrant colour palate and artificiality of Marvel Comic Movies, and this is its downfall.
Additionally the characters are all so cliched; again just like Marvel Comic movies. Gibson's direction fails to grasp that this is a story of real people rather than fictional heroes.
I was really drawn towards this film on seeing that it was based on a true story. Normally when I really want to see a film I end up a tad disappointed but not in this case.
This was a fantastic story of a young man that didn't fit it but ultimately showed he was a fine brave distinguished hero.
The action is graphic but needs to be to try and accurately depict the true horror of war. Of course we can't even begin to fully appreciate what these soldiers went through but this is a story of faith hope and heroism.
It's one I have recommend to my grown up daughters and would be a great idea to show this in schools. I'm not going to go into details regarding the full story as other reviewers have already done so but suffice to say this is an excellent thought provoking film, well produced and I will be watching it again.
Having seen the reviews thought I'd give it this a try. I saw some clips on You Tube and it is a war film of sorts that we haven't seen in a while.
I am a bit confused why the issue was made such a big thing. The main character of Desmond Doss wants to be a medic but not use a rifle based on a real life person but he suffers being beaten from other soldiers during his training boot camp and still goes on ahead, despite the others not convinced by his actions although he believes God will save him rather than a weapon.
I watched Band of Brothers and the medic there never used a weapon nor did the medic in Saving Private Ryan so not sure what the point here was.
I still find it a bit unreliastic how Doss did lower several near death soldiers down Hacksaw Ridge with a rope but then again, maybe it DID happen, considering the Japanese were nearby he did well to do what he did.
Overall a good film but not quite good as Saving Private Ryan. Mel Gibson can certainly create some impressive movie moments, whether acting, directing or producing and this has to be up there with his finest achievements.
Maybe I'm a soft git but I can't watch this without getting a lump in my throat and as stories of heroism go this was a story that had to be told.

In case you don't know, this is the story of a Christian man who wants to serve his country in war time but doesn't want to take life, so he joins the Army as a medic then has to suffer through the abuse of his superiors and peers because he refuses to carry a gun.

This is an excellent film telling a true story and although the events take part during wartime this is by no means sensationalised.
The humanity and faith of the main character is amply portrayed without being "preachy" or overduly sentimental. The heroism of an ordinary soldier under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions is clearly shown.
This film deserves a wide audience screening and should encourage people to step outside their comfort zone in order to accomplish something worth while in their lives.
