On the slightly down side, for my liking, the film was a tad too short, or at least it seemed to end too abruptly - I guess I just wanted it to continue!
I am an avid Ghost in the Shell fan and I do not regret buying this box set. Part of the value of the Stand Alone complex series is that their density means they can be watched many times, but this box set takes the main arcs from the two series - The Laughing Man and The Individual Eleven - and creates entire films out of them.
It's a great action sci-fi flick that I'll enjoy watching again and again. Does that mean it's a great addition to the Ghost in the Shell series as a whole For anyone who's looking to get into the Ghost in the Shell universe then please don't start with this, I'd highly recommend the anime GITS: SAC instead since it's story moves along at a great speed.
As much as I love the original movie I find the pacing will turn a lot of new comers away I was fine with the pacing but it really bothers some new comers to the series that I've sat down and watched it with.
At first, I did not understand the negative comments about this movie because it was so entertaining that it pushed me towards a research about the entire world of Ghost in the Shell.
Although I can now understand the fans and their critical point of view, after all they know a lot more than I do, if you never read the books, if you are not aware of that world, the movie might bring you into something completly different about our possible futur and even wake the desire to know more about it : were did it start and were will it go.
For someone who is not familiar with that world, the movie itself is, as I said, really entertaining. It's gorgious, colorful, amazing and the plot and the end are not so predictable than expected.
You might be very well surprise and get really curious about that world. It definitivly worth the look. One person found this helpful.
Live-action remake of the original japanese animation sci-fi classic. Had some controversy about whitewashing - seems to be a theme that hovers around these days.
To me, what matters is if the role fits. I thought the actors - with makeup, prosthetics and all - do resemble original characters. More importantly, acting is good - for what the scripts allows for, and there's quite a bit more characterizations here than in the original - which is certainly a pro.
Solid action and overall good effects. There are several exposition scenes, but this was also prevalent in the original. Though, a con would be that this adaptation is thematically toned down, less complex and compelling than the original.

Story: 3 Stars no fault of the leads the story simply deviates from the original by focusing more on action then the psychological and tacking on an Americanised ending.
I love Scarlett Johansson for the varied roles she is willing to try. Scarlett was very good in the role and support performances should also be applauded.
Scarlett Johansson does not disappoint, and in spite of the criticisms about the lack of diversity, I found the cross cultural settings to be done well and sensitively.
There is an otherwordly quality to Johansson's acting and it fits well with the movie. I don't know the books, and perhaps, that left me more room to enjoy the movie, but I do recommend it for its entertainment quality, and the imaginative world that it portrays.

Scarlett Johanssen makes a great Major, giving the right level of detachment for her situation. Anybody that complains about having a non-asian actor for the role is talking utter nonsense.
A Japanese woman's mind inhabits a generic female shell. Beat Takashi is just about perfect as Aramaki, an old bad-ass that nobody gets the better of.
Batou's story is in the background, but we see how he comes to get his signature eye mods. Saito has little screen time, but what he has is excellent.
Togusa is perhaps underused, but generally this is very much The Major's story. The visuals are awe-inspiring, seriously some of the best I have seen in getting across a vision of a tech-heavy future.
Scenes from the source material are brought to life brilliantly. The accompanying soundtrack has shades of the original film, but is very much a dark, synthy, 80s inspired layer that adds great atmosphere to the film.
I went in expecting three stars, was very pleasantly surprised. I again went into this with very little expectation, I had seen the original Anime and am normally against Western live action remakes.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. It looked 'pretty' and not just because of the lead Actress Scarlett Johansson who has a very odd walk throughout, almost like she is imitating a male.
The story was told well and flowed nicely, the other characters were padded out nicely and you had the beginnings of a good sense of chemistry between characters before the movie felt like it came to an abrupt end.
However, I did very much enjoy what I watched and would probably give it another watch in the near future. That being said, I would have given it 4 stars instead of five because the aforementioned cognitive dissonance, but it is a very good film and therefore I gave it five.
If you are unfamiliar with the existing canon, then it is a good film in its own right and you will not be disappointed. If you want to dig deeper into the back story, start here and then progress to the rest of the works.

Johansson remains ever watchable, actions sequences are interesting, etc. I saw it at the cinema and loved it so much that I got it on Blu-ray.
No I haven't read the comics, so I'm not upset by any misrepresentations, but can understand why some people would be.
What I saw was an action packed, dark Sci-fi film, with humour that has a great meaningful story and fantastic special effects.
