Lights were shone through the windows to make it look like it was daytime. The crew painted the hospital's brick walls to look like plywood.
This served the dual purpose of acting as scenery and blocking the set from view of a local road. The crew wanted to film at the old Worcester State Hospital , but demolition of surrounding buildings made it impossible.
Borderland State Park in Easton, Massachusetts , was used for the cabin scene. The film used Peddocks Island as a setting for the story's island.
East Point , in Nahant, Massachusetts , was the location for the lighthouse scenes. The film does not have an original score.
Instead, Scorsese's longtime collaborator Robbie Robertson created an ensemble of previously recorded material to use in the film. According to a statement on Paramount's website: "The collection of modern classical music [on the soundtrack album] was hand-selected by Robertson, who is proud of its scope and sound.
A full track listing of the album is below. All the musical works are featured in the final film. Shutter Island is a period piece with nods to different films in the film noir and horror genres, paying particular homage to Alfred Hitchcock 's works.
There have been differing opinions over the ending of the film, in which Laeddis asks Dr. Sheehan, "[W]hich would be worse — to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?
Professor James Gilligan of New York University was Scorsese's psychiatric adviser, and he said that Laeddis's last words mean: "I feel too guilty to go on living.
I'm not going to actually commit suicide, but I'm going to vicariously commit suicide by handing myself over to these people who're going to lobotomize me.
The film premiered at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival as part of the competition screening on February 13, The site's critical consensus reads, "It may not rank with Scorsese's best work, but Shutter Island ' s gleefully unapologetic genre thrills represent the director at his most unrestrained.
Its process is more important than its story, its structure more important than the almost perfunctory plot twists it perpetrates.
It's a thriller, a crime story and a tortured psychological parable about collective guilt. It's all done with flawless directorial command.
Scorsese has fear to evoke, and he does it with many notes. See for yourself. Sadly, that something turns out to be the movie itself.

In , widower U. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, go on a ferry boat to Shutter Island, the home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient, Rachel Solando who was incarcerated for drowning her three children.
Despite being kept in a locked cell under constant supervision, she has escaped the hospital and the desolate island.
In Rachel's room, Teddy and Chuck discover a code that Teddy breaks. He tells Chuck that he believes the code points to a 67th patient, when records show only Teddy also reveals that he wants to avenge the death of his wife Dolores, who was murdered two years prior by a man called Andrew Laeddis, whom he believes is an inmate in Ashecliffe Hospital.
After Hurricane Carol hits the island, Teddy and Chuck investigate Ward C, where Teddy believes government experiments with psychotropic drugs are being conducted.
While separated from Chuck for a short while in Ward C, Teddy meets a patient called George Noyce, who tells him that everything is an elaborate game designed for him, and that Chuck is not to be trusted.
As Teddy and Chuck return to the main hospital area, they are separated. Teddy discovers a woman in a sea cave he tried to take refuge in who says she is the real Rachel Solando.
She tells him she was actually a psychiatrist at Ashecliffe, and when she discovered the illegal experiments being run by them, she was incarcerated as a patient.
She escaped and has been hiding in different places on the island. She warns him about the other residents of the island, telling him to take care with the food, medication and cigarettes, which have been laced with psychotropic drugs.
When Teddy returns to the hospital, he can't find Chuck and is told he had no partner. He escapes and tries to rescue Chuck at the lighthouse, where he believes the experiments take place.
He reaches the top of the lighthouse and finds only hospital administrator Dr. Cawley seated at a desk.
A film that has already completely split the critics. A movie that messes with you. And no one likes to be messed with. And that is exactly where it exceeds.
Think I'm contradicting myself? Shutter Island is one of the most well crafted psychological thrillers to come by since Silence Of The Lambs.
And it is no coincidence both were brilliantly written novels. Shutter Island is adapted by a book written by Dennis Lehane wrote gone baby, gone and mystic river.
It is a book filled with twists and turns, that will leave the reader dizzy. And, that is what it's film counterpart does to the fullest.
Martin Scorsese helms the director chair, in a movie where he is more free than any before. This is Scorsese at his most unrestrained.
Marty takes what he has learned from the great films of the past and puts it into his. The master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock's influence is everywhere you look in this film.
And it is no wonder, considering Scorsese even showed one of his greatest works to the crew: Vertigo.
And many of those ideas are present in Shutter Island; the cliff scenes scream Hitchcock. This is a film that creeps and crawls, and is filled with dark corners.
And it is all heightened by the coming storm that looms over the island. This is classic film noir. They go to this mysterious island enveloped in fog to investigate an escape.
From these opening scenes, Marty has set up a dark and creepy premise. Almost the whole movie incorporates this story as Teddy desperately tries to find the truths he seeks.
Teddy is shown as a scared man; a man of war and violence as portrayed in various flashbacks. These will go on to be increasingly important as the story progresses.
We follow Teddy on his quest, through every dark corridor and perilous confrontations. Slowly, we are given pieces to the puzzle, but the audience does not even realize it.
For we, like Teddy, are blind. For the moment at least. It is because of this that the thrilling conclusion will leave many blindsided.
But, you see, that is where this thriller becomes something more. We as the audience are put in Teddy's shoes, and we feel all the things he feels.
It is a complete assault on the senses, and it works beautifully. This is a film you must watch carefully. That is another thing that sets this apart, it is a horror film that makes you actually think.
In this day and age, I'm not surprised some found it terrible esp. Scorsese's ultimate goal here is to wake you up. And trust me, you probably wont like it.
This is also a film I would recommend seeing a second time. In fact, it is even better the second time.
All those pieces of that puzzle you didn't catch the first time, you will the second. You see, we as the audience are first put in the shoes of Teddy.
The second? Well, without giving too much away, lets just say you are put in someones else's shoes entirely during the second viewing. Drammatico Thriller.
