On a par with the best Hollywood or Bollywood "blockbusters. I'm studying translations of Admiral Yi's "War Diary" and "Memorials to the Court," which increased my pleasure at watching the movie.
Well worth the time. This is a very well done from that, near as I could discover, follows historical events fairly closely. It is not always easy to follow.
I had to watch it a second time to fully follow the story. Also watch it with English subtitles and not dubbed voice actors. The dubbing sounds like the actors took valium before reading their lines.
One person found this helpful. A cheesy adventure. Don't expect anything approaching realism, unless you believe large square boats with oars can move at 40 knots.
The main character is intriguing, but the story really doesn't develop well. It's really a shame, because the obviously spent some money on production value, and this historic event deserves some great treatment.
But if you're looking for a compelling story like Hero or Ip Man, this isn't it. And unlike another reviewer, I wouldn't even mention Master and Commander in the same breath.

But then the breaking point seems reached when General Bae Seol , the deserter of Chilcheollyang, burns the turtle ship and has his men make an attempt at Yi's life.
Although Yi escapes and Bae is killed for his act of treachery, the ship is lost, boosting confidence among the Japanese and further dispiriting his own troops.
In order to seek an answer, Yi travels to the Myeongnyang Strait , an area notorious for its strong and treacherous currents which the Japanese intend to cross on their way to Hansong.
Later, he confides in his son Hoe that, in order to win the fight, he has to turn the fear paralyzing his men into courage. Upon hearing that the departure of the Japanese attack fleet is imminent, Yi abandons his base and moves to Usuyeong after burning the naval facilities to the ground.
The next morning, Yi's fleet arrives in the strait and is shortly met by the Japanese, who are using the morning tide to move into the channel, with Kurushima leading the avantgarde force.
Yi engages Kurushima's fleet in battle, but as the other Korean commanders are still hesitant to involve themselves, Yi's flagship is quickly surrounded and attacked by boarding parties.
In this apparently hopeless situation, Yi commands several cannons to be fired from the rower deck's port hatches in a concentrated volley, using their recoil to blast the ship free of its encirclement.
As Yi has hoped, this bold act of survival inspires the rest of his countrymen to take the fight to the enemy.
When the tide turns and forms a whirlpool in the middle of the channel, thus beginning to solidify Yi's defensive position, Kurushima orders an all-out attack with the rest of his ships.
Despite the efforts of Haru and a ship loaded with black powder charges , the renewed courage of the Koreans prevails, though heavy sacrifices are made.
Kurushima, realizing that he is now on his own, boards the Korean flagship, but is decapitated by Yi himself after taking several arrows from Korean archers , and his head is hung from the tip of the ship's mast.
When Yi's ship itself is caught in the whirlpool, his civilian navy servants and local fishermen courageously drag the vessel back to safety.
Joined by the rest of the fleet, Yi leads a counterattack which deals the Japanese forces a crushing blow, forcing them into retreat and leaving the Koreans triumphant.
The film ends with the reminiscence to the first encounter of the Japanese with the turtle ship in In the 16th century, a general called Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified Japan and the long civil war in Japan was ended.
At that time, most Koreans did not think about any possibility of invasion from Japan and ignored the war-readiness of the latter.

General Yi Sun- sin is portrayed by the most famous and according to many including myself also the best contemporary actor from South Korea; the charismatic Choi Min-sik who rose to fame with his roles in the spy thriller "Shiri", the mystery-thriller "Oldboy" and the psychological horror movie "I Saw the Devil" among others.
The movie revolves around the Battle of Myeongnyang around which took place during the Imjin War when Japan tried to invade the Korean peninsula and even parts of Ming Dynasty China.
After a disastrous defeat, the Korean fleet only consisted of 13 warships while the Japanese gathered warships and around logistical support ships.

The unexpected defeat shocked the Japanese and encouraged the Koreans. Joseon Dynasty's navy was able to regroup with Ming Dynasty's army and the Japanese were expelled out of the Korean peninsula the next year.
The film shows us the weeks before the famous battle, an extensive depiction of the battle itself and its immediate aftermath and a short look beyond in the concluding minutes.
This movie is separated in two almost equal parts. The first hour introduces the viewers to the historical context, the desperate condition of the Korean navy and the inhabitants in general and the most important characters from both sides of the belligerents.
I feel that this part of the movie is slightly too long. Instead of focusing on too many characters and a lot of tactical dialogs, the movie could have shown us the origins of the war to get a better idea of the entire context.
It would have been a great idea to start the film with Won Gyun's disastrous defeat against the Japanese navy during the Battle of Chilcheollyang and to quickly show how a nearly defeated country arose from its ashes to gather for a final decisive battle.
While the set pieces and special effects look stunning, the dialogs on the first hour of the movie are exhausting and the acting is only of an average quality despite the promising cast.
Both the acting and the dialogs are somewhat wooden. There is no character one could somehow sympathize with and the acting is not what viewers will retain from this movie.
The movie gets a boost during the second hour that is almost entirely dedicated to the battle itself. Some people might think that almost an hour of naval battle might be overlong and repetitive but that's not the case in here.
This is one of the very finest, if not the very best naval battle ever shown in cinema. There are many ups and downs during the battle, several different strategies are used and even the fights themselves vary from cannon fire, over confrontations with bows and arrows and intense sword fights to a few elements of martial arts duels.
A few clever tactical tricks from both sides are also added to the epic battle. Acting, choreographies, images, score, sounds, special effects and stunts are reaching one high point after another in the entertaining second half of this movie.
The last five minutes after the final battle are a short but nice conclusion closing the circle to the beginning of the film that gives the viewers the occasion to calm down again.
While the set pieces and most parts of the story are faithful to the historical background, some elements depicting the different historical characters and parts of the battle itself might be dramatized to a certain degree.
That's why the movie has a slightly patriotic touch but this is only some minor criticism as this film isn't as exaggerated as many contemporary Chinese war movies for example.
